Contractor Tools & Materials Security

Theft of contractor tools and materials can be an expensive problem. In addition to the insurance deductible, other costs generated from theft include restocking expenses, lost production, missed schedules, and increased insurance premiums. The following preventative actions can be taken by the general and/or subcontractor to reduce theft of tools and materials:

  • Maintain an inventory-control system for all equipment, tools, and materials. Include photographs of equipment and expensive tools.
  • Mark all tools and equipment in a conspicuous, distinctive manner to allow for easy identification.
  • Implement a checkout system for all tools and equipment.
  • Contact police before starting the job and request site patrols after work hours.
  • Utilize security guards with designated rounds and checkpoints. Provide guards with a means of communication.
  • Encourage neighbors to report suspicious activities on the site.
  • Provide for nighttime lighting of the site.
  • Provide for limited access to the site, preferably with lockable gates.
  • Require prompt reporting by employees of theft and vandalism.
  • Keep tools securely locked in storage trailers or sheds.
  • Use a hardened metal chain to immobilize tool gang boxes.
  • Gang boxes should be designed to protect padlock shacks from bolt cutters.
  • Use only high-security locks. Never leave keys in locks or leave locks in an open position.
  • Equip tool trailers and sheds with intrusion alarm systems that trigger a timed strobe and audible warning.
  • Provide a secure area for target building materials, such as appliances, fixtures, wiring, copper pipe, etc.
  • Keep the on-site inventory of materials to a minimum and store them away from perimeter fencing.
  • Locate trash bins directly in front of jobsite office and carefully supervise all trash removal from site.
